Worth a listen especially for fans of the Mamas and Papas. One person found this helpful. I have to admit I had no clue Denny had put 2 albums out, I only had the album, and when I learned about this release I was very excited and ordered my copy in advance. Well, it arrived Thursday and I've been ecstatic ever since. I can NOT bring myself to take it out of my stereo, it goes to work with me, it's in my portable CD player.
To us fans, we get Denny Doherty at his solo finest, his beautiful tenor voice at top shape, and with strong reinforcement courtesy of Cass and Michelle we have what is probably the closest we'll ever get to the 6th mamas and papas album. The harmonious atmosphere on this album works on many planes.
Not only are the vocal harmonies borderline perfect, you can just feel the connection between 3 people who have worked with eachother for so long, been through thick and thin together, and that just makes the impact twice as powerful.
The MIA papa, John Phillips, is all too present in "You'll never know" and "Give me back that old familiar feeling", the way the vocals are arranged, the harmonies echo all the way back to "Creeque Alley" "Free Advice", etc. It's a very candid, personal album of Denny Doherty, songs like "Southern comfort" "Only happen in America" and "Lay me down" have a very autobiographical feeling to them, Denny's singing from the bottom of his heart on those tracks and they just sweep you off to a very beautiful state of mind.
I can only hope this renaissance of reissues of John, Cass, Michelle and Denny's pre and post group recordings will go on, with more releases of Mama Cass' solo albums and Michelle Phillips's gorgeous album.
Hope you enjoy this CD to its fullest as I have and keep on enjoying. He always had a beautiful voice and with the right arrangement and lyrics it could sound sent from heaven. I will say that John Phillips knew best how to writ and arrange for his voice, but I find 'Waiting for a Song' worth it.
He died too soon. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Translate all reviews to English. Simone and You'll Never Know are the best tracks, with Cass and Michelle adding gorgeous layers in support. Report abuse.
