You Can Understand Me - Martin Phillipps & The Chills* - Sunburnt (CD, Album)

The organ meanders like the shifting patterns of a suitably psychedelic optical toy, and an electric guitar purrs out its riffs low in the mix, turning the occupants of the capsule into outsize feline astronauts of Bagpuss colouring. Recorded live, it captures the group at full force. It later reappeared on Soft bomb with a typically sumptuous string arrangement by Van Dyke Parks.

We can only imagine what a record that would have been if, like Joanna Newsom, Martin Phillipps had had funds enough for a whole album of VDP arrangements. For if nothing else, ghosts have longevity. All are of equal brilliance, or chilliness.

Milkos of independent and psychedelic leaning, obviously. Sense perfected when the student graduated virtually unemployable and started signing on at the Medina Road social security office in Finsbury Park. While Morrissey marries it to tough-knock Mancunian upbringing, Phillipps makes you think of camping — the one with whom you want to be sharing a tent is sharing it with someone else.

By and large it maintains the consistency and avoidance of filler that had been the strength of previous Chills albums. There had been fourteen phases of the group by October , making Phillips seem only marginally less inclined to hire and fire than Mark E. Smith, but in fact the majority of the changes were forced on Martin rather than being at his behest. Occasionally I may come across on these pages as a character of somewhat refined tastes but now and again I confess I am partial to a slab of idiot noise.

This derives from formative listening experiences centring on the garage and whirlwind sounds of early Creation and perhaps in particular the Jesus And Mary Chain. On the evidence of the Dunedin double — and I have very little else to go on, given that it was one of the few occasions they found themselves in a studio — this is also the sensibility of the Stones, from the stripped down appropriation of the name to their melodic recklessness and discordant, youthful sonics. Now of course it would be a hallmark to damn and date a group were anyone unsophisticated enough to use it.

But the kind of group which can channel a limited colour palette into starbursts of barely tonal noise remain few and far between, and I think the Stones must have been one such. But sadly the Stones themselves never made it far from the starting block that was Dunedin double. Space, the slow rat-a-tat-tat of the drums, the dum-dum-dum of the bass, the wiry constant of a strummed guitar.

A distant-sounding singer shouts his vocal from the other side of a valley. I also sang a new vocal over it, which is louder but not entirely satisfactory… at least you can hear the guitars at the end.

When we did Dunedin double I knew nothing about making records and the concept of mixing was completely foreign. That meant tracking down and treating myself to a copy, and in so doing, safely spending more on one vinyl object than I ever have before. A bogey-group. Scattered through my writing on Tangents are references to them.

But the moment has finally come to square up to the music made by Graeme Downes and his varying line-up of fellow Verlaines. Wish me luck. How I came across the Verlaines illustrates the fervency they inspired in those who discovered them. Blitzer from Have A Jewish Christmas? Why the inclusion of the Martin Phillipps name? MP: I think it was time to acknowledge that it had already become a solo project, but at the same time the band is very important as separate entity, particularly live.

PT: What kind of thing are you listening to at the moment? MP: The Silver Apples.

  8. Sep 14,  · In a typically forthcoming interview with Elsewhere recently, Martin Phillipps – mainman of the Chills – observed that their last album Silver Bullets of (19 years on from the previous studio album Sunburnt) was in small part a clearing house of songs he'd been sitting on. So he could understand why some said it was just him tidying up scraps but, he asserted, this new album.
